The first Filipino 3D animated movie RPG Metanoia is indeed a true gem of a film. When I saw the movie together with my brothers, niece and nephew last Christmas Day, I was not expecting too much due to my past experience with other local animated film, i.e. lousy story or just a trying hard imitation of a Disney movie. To put it bluntly, the sole reason I watched the film is for my brothers to experience their first 3D film (with shades). However, after the film, I sincerely felt good and more than satisfied with this extraordinary Pinoy film.
The story of RPG Metanoia revolves around Nico, a typical youngster, in a very typical family, in a very typical Pinoy community. A weakling in the real world, he finds refuge and purpose in a virtual dimension of an MMORPG called Metanoia. Together with his band of friends, they joined an international tournament but eventually failed due to Nico’s own doing. This lost resulted for them to be banished from the computer shop. On the side, the gang meet May, a tomboyish lass with much spunk and athleticism that both amazes and scares the boys. She then introduced Nico and his friends to some Larong Pinoy as a better alternative to online gaming. While offline, something went wrong in the world of Metanoia which forced Nico and his team to return to the virtual and kick some butt.
The storyline of Metanoia is simple yet polished and well thought of. As most reviewers would say, the strength of the film is not solely on its 3D animated format, but the endearing characters that made it so believable and inspiring. Yes, there are some flaws particularly in the dubbing and frame rate but after several minutes you will not notice them anymore. You become so hooked and even nostalgic in the film due to its detailed representation of iconic Pinoy items (from the food, furniture and landscape) and display of Pinoy street games. Another important aspect of the film was the moral values it imparts- love of family and friends. This film is not preachy nor is it apologetic. It is like Luis Suarez (the film’s director) captured the essence of the contemporary Pinoy culture in a very sweeping manner. The supposedly conflict between playing online computer games versus the traditional were reconciled effectively. Moderation and balance are keys. Other notable aspect of the films was its outstanding musical scoring (thanks to Mr. Gerald Salonga and FILHARMONIKA). This one of the best sounding Pinoy films I ever watched.
Overall, RPG Metanoia is really a cut above the other MMFF entries for its wonderful and honest showcase of Pinoy artistry and values. It is definitely worthy to be considered as the best Pinoy animated film so far.
